Weight gain and moon face from your steroid prescription. Dark under eye circles from the lack of sleep. Hair loss. Butterfly rashes. Frequent bruises…
These are just a few of the problems that can make looking your best with lupus such a challenge. "I have days when I look in the mirror and I can't believe the girl looking back is me," says WebMD Lupus Community expert, Christine Miserandino, having lost all her hair not once, but twice, during her lifetime with lupus.
She asks the Lupus Community for tips on feeling and looking better with lupus. One woman recommends mineral makeup -- expensive, but worth it, she says. She also recommends liquid concealer and highlighters with light-reflecting particles to hide under eye circles.
To help with thinning hair, one woman recommends washing your hair every other day, instead of every day, and using hair shine spray. Another woman suggests using dry shampoo in between washings, which she says can add volume and extend the life of your hair color.
Another woman reports that she took a GI Jane approach to hair loss. When it started falling out, she shaved all her hair off and made it a fashion statement, accessorizing with bandanas and funky hats.
Sunscreen is essential, of course. Several women recommend products that have sunscreen in them along with added sun protection. To minimize paleness, one woman recommends "tan in a can," which is a tanning spray that can also cover bruises, rashes, and veins.
Learn to take more time when getting ready for an event, and beat fatigue by sitting while applying makeup and styling hair, says another woman. She also recommends watching YouTube videos for makeup application tips. "It's all about experimenting with products and ways of applying them," she says. "I may have lupus but, I'm never going to stop being a girly girl!"
