WebMD Expert Discussion: Sleep: What's That?

When was the last time you slept like a baby? Was it when you were a baby? In the WebMD Lupus Community, lupus activist and patient Christine Miserandino says that like many people living with lupus or other chronic conditions, sleep is difficult, and she always seems to be "chasing the perfect dream."

The problem, Miserandino says, is that one change in your routine isn't likely to cure insomnia. Lifestyle factors such as inconsistent bedtimes and having caffeine late in the day can combine to make anyone have trouble sleeping. Add the common issues for people with lupus -- like medication side effects, pain, and night sweats, and you have a recipe for difficult sleep. Just thinking about it all could keep you up at night!

Miserandino offers these tips for people who are losing sleep due to lupus:

  • If you're taking medications that interfere with your sleep, try taking them earlier in the day. Check with your doctor first before making any changes.
  • If you take a medication that makes you sleepy, use it to your advantage by taking it before bedtime. Again, check with your doctor before changing the time.
  • If you have a lot on your mind, keep a notebook next to your bed. Write down your late night thoughts -- and then put them out of your head.
  • Try using a white noise machine to signal your brain that it's time to sleep.

Other members of the community had these suggestions:

  • Create a consistent bedtime routine. Take a relaxing shower, read for a while, and go to bed at the same time every night.
  • Try chamomile tea before bed to help you relax.

What keeps you awake -- or helps you to sleep?
