"Modern love—gets me to the church on time…" sings David Bowie in his classic tune "Modern Love." These days I'm humming to a different set of lyrics, something along the lines of “Modern life—gets me wanting much more time ..."
What happened to all the time-saving innovations of our century? Cell phones, handheld email and calendars, 24-hour web access to any business, virtual homework tutors, online college courses, holiday and grocery shopping in the comfort of one's living room. As my grandmother would have said to me, "Oy vey. Just the thought of it makes me run screaming for the hills for solitude." And that was 20 years ago when I was just trying to help her program voice mail on her telephone.
What about running for the hills for solitude? I am not so sure that is a viable option except for the most expert of hermit naturists. So I am going to embrace our Modern Life, and I invite you to join me and WebMD as we delve into the how-to's of coping in today's world.
WebMD will be focusing on all aspects of modern living over the next year to bring you the information you need to spend your time in better ways. So, we can enjoy our Modern Life today through Modern Love (sounds interesting and it is…), Modern Parenting, Modern Work (and how it impacts our sleeping, eating, exercise, spirit, and self-esteem), and Modern Beauty (with more solutions than ever for problem skin, hair, nails, and … aging—argh!).
In this issue, talk show host Kelly Ripa shares with WebMD readers how she copes with her own very modern life. She is not off-putting, intimidating, or in some celebrity bubble. She is the real thing. With her career, three children (Michael, 10, Lola, 6, and Joaquin, 4 — with husband, actor Mark Consuelos), and lots of advice from her mother and mother-in-law, she tells it like it is. I found myself saying, “Her, too! OK, now I feel better…" when she tells us about her kids and parenting struggles. You will love our interview with her — read it now.
Enjoy the advent of summer and visit WebMD.com for our groundbreaking coverage and healthy insights into our modern times. Here's what's on my list: spring cleaning (with an eco-conscious mind-set), cancer screening, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and getting ready for bathing suit season (why do I feel like I am always getting ready for bathing suit season?).
Yours in well-being,
