I've had a stiff neck all week. Is this ever a cause for concern?
Answer: Yes, especially if you also have a high fever, severe headache, vomiting, and a purplish rash that looks like a bruise. You could have meningitis, a serious infection of the meninges -- the tough layer of tissue that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. Other possible symptoms include seizures, sleepiness, sensitivity to light, and dizzy spells.
