Kristin Nocco (NAH-koh) used to work in pharmaceutical sales, calling on doctors to tout her company's latest drug. Now she has a new gig as a "drug information consultant." She still calls on doctors, but with a more impartial pitch.
We talk about all the drugs that are available, as well as, diet and exercise.
She talks about the class of drugs. She doesn't push any particular drug.
Instead, Kristin, a former pharmacist, helps doctors choose the best drug for the patient.
I really feel that we are giving evidence-based information to make the best prescribing decision. And sometimes that will be a cost-effective generic and sometimes that will be a brand product.
Kristin works for The State of Pennsylvania. Her job is supported by pace, a program that helps poor seniors pay for their medications. The idea is to save money by reminding doctors there are alternatives to expensive, new drugs.
The nice thing is that, in many cases, there are generics of that drug that's a very valid product which will save the patient a lot of money. Especially the elderly on a fixed income.
During each visit, Kristin covers a particular disease and all of the treatment options.
She allows me also to take a quiz and its very refreshing for me, it keeps me on my toes.
We get paid by the hour. We don't have a commission, we don't have an incentive. I don't know what my doctors are prescribing, whereas the traditional drug companies do. And we're really there to educate our physicians on the best prescribing practices.
And that, in turn, is best for the patient. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
