A car crash happens in a flash, but the painful after effects can last years. Just ask Bassam Kahlil.
I believe she was putting on make up and used my car to stop.
After the accident, Bassam's neck stiffened so he couldn't turn, and he developed devastating headaches.
I would actually see double vision. I couldn't stand lights, and it just felt like my head was going to explode.
When the head gets thrown forward in a crash, joints in the neck are strained and damage – whiplash.
An injury to the joint here can actually refer pain to the back of the head, to the front of the head, the prefrontal region, behind the eye.
Despite many medications, Bassam's pain lasted for years.
They had me on migraine medication, Percoset, Darvan, Darvocet, Vicodin, I mean I could go on.
But at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Doctor Curtis Slipman is studying a treatment that takes little more time than a car crash, mere seconds, to treat a lifetime of pain.
X-ray machine buzzing.
Move forward.
Using X-Ray imaging, Doctor Slipman injects steroids between the vertebrae.
It's our belief that the steroids stop that inflammatory process. When the inflammation goes away, the pain dissipates.
The precise injection avoids the side effects of oral steroids. For Bassam, the relief was dramatic.
Going back used to really hurt you. Mm-hm. Going back, and to the left. I couldn't do either one.
As for the headaches, he still needs medication, but nothing more than a couple of ibuprofens. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
