The best thing caregivers can do, adds Ferrell, "is to make time for themselves emotionally and to physically care for themselves." "You've got to eat and got to sleep," she says.

But that can be easier said than done. "I am a mother and have young kids. My focus is not as much on me," Vieira says.

"If I ever thought I was a celebrity, all I'd have to do is walk through my front door -- my cat has peed, my dog barks, my kids all have issues, and Richard is coming home. It's humbling."
