Sarah Padolsky (POE-dahl-skee) has serious business underway on her laptop. She's giving someone a dental implant - in virtual reality.
It asks you whether or not you think this patient is a good candidate for the implant. Um, you give the reasons for it and then on the second visit you go in and you actually, um, start the implant.
Sarah helped Doctor Roman Cibirka (sih-BURKE-uh) develop this simulation video game. They see it as a great way to supplement training.
The idea is that uh they would have an anytime, anywhere opportunity to take the knowledge and skills as they have acquired and in that didactic arena, the classroom, the laboratory and reinforce those opportunities, that knowledge base in the clinic uh with the use of the game.
Students can ask virtual patients about their medical history, do an exam and come up with a diagnosis. If an implant is needed, the student can do a practice run using the simulation – before treating the actual patient.
We know that through the literature that surgeons that use games are better, they're faster and they have less uh risks to patients through the use of video games.
It's always better to make mistakes on 'virtual' patients than real ones. For example – injecting anesthesia in the wrong spot can make a patient uncomfortable and leave a new dentist red-faced. So, the more students practice to get it right, the more confidence they build.
If they have a better, stronger more robust learning experience, the end goal, I think the outcome for the benefit of society is improved patient safety outcomes.
As good as the game is, Doctor Cibirka points out that it's critical to combine it with actual clinical training. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
