Bill Brown loves to be outdoors. He's a volunteer firefighter and rescue worker, but even yard work has started taking its toll.
I finally went to a doctor to see why I was in such pain and really having a hard time even walking in the daily routine.
Bill was diagnosed with osteoarthritis.
I don't feel like I really have the strength to resume some of the rigorous activities that I was doing before.
A quick fix for Bill's arthritis might be brewing in this research lab. Doctor John Szivek (SEE-vick) and his team are working on an alternative to joint replacement.
There seem to be a lot of stem cells in fat and if you can extract those cells from the fat tissue, it's fairly straight forward to convert them to cartilage cells using a number of different strategies.
Once removed, a patient's fat cells would be manipulated in the lab, then surgically implanted back into the patient's ailing joint.
We would create something called a scaffold, and we will collect the cells, grow the tissue on that scaffold and then place it into the patient.
The scaffold is made of porous material that will be absorbed by the body and replaced with the patient's own tissue.
The scaffold allows time for the cells to form a high end cartilage like material which is the type of cartilage that you have in your joint.
I would certainly be for doing that, then having a knee replacement.
Doctor Szivek expects it to be another few years before this advance could make it to market… but the future looks promising. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
