14-year-old twins Mario and Raul Rodriguez are taller than ever before but it wasn't because of a growth spurt.
How are you guys doing now? I'm doing good.
Six weeks ago, the twins were a twisted twosome. They had scoliosis, a curved and twisted spine. Mario's wasn't so bad, but Raul had one shoulder higher than the other.
These people noticed it. He was constantly telling, my parents would constantly tell me. So everybody would tell me.
To fix it, Doctor Sarwahi used one of the newest techniques,Thoracic pedicle screws.
Screws go from the back into the front of the spine which you don't see. They're inside the bone.
The screws secure strong flexible stainless steel or titanium rods to the spinal column.
Because this corrections is so strong, the fixation is so strong, then these kids can go back to their full activities sooner than later. I mean, and then they do not need a brace or a cast which used to be the pattern in the past.
At first the brothers were worried about having spine surgery.
I'm more of the pessimistic brother of the two.
I'm the ying. He's my yang.
But now that they're on the mend, the twins recognize what a big difference the surgery made.
Better than normal 'cause now I can run longer. Wrestle with this kid all the time.
Now Mario and Raul can stand tall without as much effort.
They were 5 ft 7 inches when I saw them before surgery, they were my height. Now they're 5 ft 9 in. They're taller than me.
A happy ending to a twisted tale. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
