Osteoporosis drugs called bisphosphonates include Fosamax, Actonel, and the monthly drug Boniva. Approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, they help slow or stop the process of bone breakdown during remodeling.

Hormone Therapy for Osteoporosis

Hormone therapy is used for prevention of osteoporosis. The FDA recommends that women first consider other therapies for the prevention of bone loss due to studies that have shown a small increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer with hormone replacement therapy.
