About two and a half years ago it started to get progressively worse.
Joel Bren's back pain was so excruciating, he couldn't sleep or drive a car, much less take a hike with his ten-year-old son.
It got to the point where I just didn't know what to do.
Doctor Stuart Kahn specializes in pain management at the Spine Institute at New York's Beth Israel Hospital. He says if you have back pain remember the A-B-C'S. A– How to assess the pain. B– How to be good to your back. And C– Know when to come into see a specialist.
Not necessarily a specialist, but certainly at a minimum, a primary care giver.
Doctor Kahn says use common sense when assessing your pain. If it's mild, try self-medicating with over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or pain reliever medications.
Use some ice or heat, whichever work. Both have physiologic reasons for benefiting pain.
Then take it easy. Bend with your knees so you don't put unnecessary strain on your back. Sit all the way back on your chair. And know when to say when.
If you have severe pain that's so disabling you can't get up out of bed, you should either call your doctor or go to an emergency room.
Get an accurate diagnosis and know your treatment options. They don't all include major surgery. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
