Twenty-one-year-old Kurt Lesker is on his university crew team, but not long ago, rowing took a back seat because of two bulging disks.
Like I couldn't bend over and stuff. And I had, I mean I had to take off three and a half weeks.
Kurt was born with a back disorder, which led to degenerative disk disease. The good news… he has no nerve damage.
The disk has been injured and he actually, you can see on the bone edges that there's been some changes in the bones.
Rowing, I mean you're just rippin' open your back the whole time. So I'm just puttin' so much pressure on the lower back.
Kurt got to the bottom of his hurt and now knows his limits, but when is nagging back pain an indication of something more serious?
Well it can be very tricky.
Generally, when lower back pain radiates down your buttocks, legs and into your hamstring area, it could mean an injured disk or a slight fracture. Muscle pain is different because it won't affect your mobility as much.
Now you can get around, usually warm up and feel better. If you really truly did structural damage to ligaments or tendons or the joints, then you really don't get better with more activity.
Doctor Norelli says your body will tell you something is wrong.
Anything out of the ordinary that doesn't seem to be getting better that actually is getting worse or staying the same.
Kurt alleviates his pain with medication, stretching exercises and therapy. This way he can continue competing and not turn his back on rowing. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
