As a chief financial officer of a busy company, Rich Werner is pretty savvy when it comes to business. But financial fixes took a backseat, following a battle with appendicitis.
It started out as what felt like a stomach virus and that lasted about two days, and then I recovered, felt fine.
Rich's recovery was short lived…
When I started running the fever of 103, I went to my family doc, who suspected it could be an appendicitis and ordered a CAT scan.
Rich was immediately rushed to the emergency room.
My appendix had ruptured and an abscess formed and walled around.
Cases like Rich's are not uncommon because diagnosing appendicitis is not always cut and dry.
So the course is not always classic, which is pain initially around your belly button, vague, non-specific, you don't feel like eating, you get a little nauseated, you may throw up.
A good indicator of appendicitis is when the pain settles to the lower, right part of the abdomen. The degree of the pain also plays a role.
It's not a snap your fingers kind of thing. It's something that progresses over the period of hours, and I think the differentiation is hour as opposed to days.
Rich's appendix was removed laporscopically… So scarring was minimal.
Everything was back to normal. Was able to run, play tennis, do all my normal things.
Including crunching the numbers. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
