Denise Dale watches what she eats. Not to shed a few pounds, but to avoid a pounding migraine.
If I went somewhere and had appetizers with blue cheese or cheddar cheese I would find like an hour or two afterwards, I would get, start getting a headache.
She's not alone. Headache expert Seymour Diamond says up to a third of migraine sufferers could be sensitive to certain chemicals in foods.
The most prominent one being a substance known as tyramine.
Tyramine is found in certain fruits, nuts, and foods. Other culprits include nitrates in lunch meats and tannins in wine. The chemicals can have an effect on blood vessels.
It's the expansion and contraction of the blood vessels pressing on the nerves that causes the pain of headache and migraine.
One way to find out if food is triggering your migraines is to keep a log.
Keep a list of what they, of their headaches and what they particularly might have eaten prior to their headaches. We have them keep track over a month's period of what the triggers are and we try to eliminate them.
Denise was surprised at some of her triggers.
Certain foods like yogurt or sour cream you would never think would be a trigger for a headache.
It's important to me to feel good and if I know something as simple as not eating certain foods or drinking certain things, it's worth it to me not to do that.
It's food for thought and fewer headaches. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
