Each year, roughly six-million Americans see their doctor because of a shoulder problem. Patricia Baumbach [BAUM-back] is one of them. But instead of a common sprain or strain, she was diagnosed with frozen shoulder... A painful, debilitating condition.
I couldn't raise my arm up because I had such pain. I couldn't, if I was sleeping, I couldn't sleep on that side, because the pain was so severe.
This shoulder joint disorder affects roughly two-percent of the population and up to 20-percent of diabetics.
It's inflammation of the shoulder capsule, or the sack that surrounds the shoulder joint. Uhm, and we're not really sure why that inflammation comes on.
If caught early, physical therapy along with steroid injections can offer permanent relief. But for Patricia, it only provided a temporary solution.
I would go and have some steroid injections and do some physical therapy and it would quiet down, and then it would flare.
That's when her doctor suggested shoulder capsular distention. During the 20-minute out-patient procedure, doctors inject a slow, steady stream of salty saline solution directly into the shoulder capsule... Gradually increasing its size.
It was not a lengthy procedure. There was no anesthesia. There was no down time in terms of going back to work.
Patients usually feel immediate relief... And will continue to improve during the required four-to-eight weeks of physical therapy.
Within a couple of months, it probably should be back to full range of motion.
One procedure not to be taken with a grain of salt. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
