Nancy Talley (TAL-lee) suffered for years from sciatica (Si-ATTIK-ah). The debilitating pain radiated from her lower back down her leg.
It was so bad sometimes, all I could do is lay on my stomach on the ground or stand up, but I couldn't sit at all.
At first, doctors thought a herniated disc was pressing on her sciatic nerve. That's pretty common. But surgery to treat the problem didn't help.
It didn't help the sciatic pain at all.
It wasn't until Nancy had an innovative test called M-R neurography that doctors spotted the real culprit - piriformis (PEER-ah-FORM-us) syndrome. A muscle in her pelvis was in spasm, pushing on the nerve.
This has been known about for decades, but it's always been impossible to diagnose it or show it.
The technique uses M-R-I technology modified with special software. It shows, for the first time, images of each nerve in the body.
It'll show if it's pinched, compressed, swollen, irritated.
If the injury comes from a muscle spasm, Doctor Filler uses M-R guided imagery to inject medication.
You can often get in and relax the muscle by putting the anesthetic just into the muscle.
Studies suggest M-R neurography could help millions of patients avoid surgery.
Like a hope, hope dawned again.
For Nancy, it's a welcome relief from pain. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
