Kelli Sargent has scoliosis, a curve in her spine that could grow worse over time. So...
Velcro coming apart.
She wears a brace most of the day hoping to stop it.
I can take it off 4 hours a day. So I take my brace off when I do play basketball and volleyball.
Basketball dribbling.
Kind of a pain for an active 13-year-old, especially since there's no guarantee the therapy will work for her.
For every article or account that I would read where a child was braced and the parents felt it was successful, I would find a horror story or a not good story.
It's true. Some kids who wear braces see benefits in six months. Others can wear one for years and still need surgery.
That timeframe of when you're gonna know the answer is quite large.
That's why researchers, like Matthew Dobbs, are conducting a study to see once and for all, who actually benefits from bracing.
We think probably we will find a subset of patients with certain types of curved patterns and the right age that bracing might be effective.
Narrowing it down could keep kids who won't benefit from a brace, from wasting time wearing one.
They're a hard plastic. They're uncomfortable in the summer. They're hot, you sweat.
And they're custom-made, so they're expensive. Kelly's taking part in the study. She wants to make a point for kids diagnosed with scoliosis in the future. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
