A day of fun turned into a knee nightmare for Stacey Bedics.
I was riding a bike and a little kid ran out in front of me. And I hit the wrong brake and went up and over my handlebars and fell directly on my knee.
Damage from that fall meant Stacey needed knee surgery. But before her OR date, she started 'prehab.'
So prehab is not just exercise. It's understanding the operation, understanding what you need to eat as far as getting your body ready for the operation, being physically fit.
Doctor Gotlin says training nearby muscles will offer support to the affected joint after surgery.
We know that if you exercise beforehand and get your muscles strong, because muscles move those bones, that the pain medication required is less after surgery.
Another prehab goal is mental readiness.
We say, 'You're going to feel like you're in a, in a battle. You're going to feel like you're in a war. You're going to be aching. You're going to not feel right. All these things are going to change for awhile.
Prehab takes time, so patients need to build that into their pre-op calendar.
A typical program of prehab really requires at least four weeks, probably eight weeks or more, of getting ready.
Stacey spent about six weeks in prehab, time that readied her for recovery.
Once that initial shock of the surgery wore off, I think once I started moving, I wanted to move a little bit more and a little bit more. And then it was just easier to really get back into every day life.
Gains she attributes to therapy started before surgery. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
