Reye's Syndrome Directory
Reye's syndrome is a childhood disease that often occurs after chickenpox or the flu and seems to be related to taking aspirin. It can cause brain swelling and liver damage and can be fatal if not treated. If caught early, children with Reye's syndrome can make a full recovery. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, odd behavior, and -- in later stages -- seizures, confusion, violence, and more. To prevent Reye's syndrome, never give aspirin to a child unless directed to do so by a doctor.
