Nancy Danforth spends a lot of time in hospitals, caring for her son, Doug. But she says her experience at the most recent one, Emory University Hospital, was different.
I could not believe when we came here what they had to offer us.
This specially designed room allows families to stay with loved ones as much as they want, while offering privacy. It's good for everyone.
Studies show that patients heal quicker if they're able to recognize someone is in the room that they know.
This setup allows families to be much more aware of what's happening to their loved ones, while allowing room for the doctors and nurses to do what they need to do.
The family member's right there to not only see what's going on, what we're doing, but we're able to answer their questions, and we're able to tell them exactly what we're doing and why we're doing it.
If I get anxious at 2 o clock in the morning, I can go out and look at him and know that he's well. If I were home I'm walking the floors, wondering what's going on.
These family-friendly rooms were born out of the hospital's labor and delivery rooms, making it feel a little more like home. The hospital is not a place Nancy really wants to be, but while her son is here, she's glad to have such a comfortable option.
When we saw this studio it was mind-boggling really.
Mindboggling - and heartwarming - to be so close to her sick son. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
