I'm told my baby has reflux. What do I do?
By definition reflux just means milk is coming up. So any baby that is spitting is refluxing, meaning the milk is coming back out of the stomach. The real issue, is it a problem? Is the reflux a problem? So a happy spitter is a baby who spits, but is happy and growing well, not having any breathing problems, looks great and so the reflux really isn't causing any problems. There's just nothing to be done but watch it go away. The concern is that if the baby is having heartburn and it really hurts. The baby is having breathing trouble because of the milk that's coming to the back of the throat and making the baby cough and gag. The baby's not gaining weight because it hurts so much to eat and the baby doesn't want to eat. The baby is, if it causes colic, colicky. That's when you worry about it. So any baby who's spitting has reflux, but gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD that everybody talks about for which some babies get medications. We call it that when the refluxing causes significant trouble for the baby and we think we have to do something about it.
