How can I prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is every parent's worst nightmare. It comes out of the blue. It's mysterious. It's tragic. It's horrible, and you never know. The good news is we've really made a dent into the prevalence of SIDS. The Back to Sleep Campaign has cut SIDS in half in this country, so it is much less frequent than it used to be. The odds are slim that a baby is going to have SIDS, but still yes, it's around, it exists. We hope someday we will be able to understand it better, that it goes down to zero because there are few things sadder than a SIDS death. There are things parents can do to lessen the odds. Back to sleep being the most important. Personally I believe in pacifiers, which have always been shown to cut the risk of SIDS, although some pediatricians don't like them. Make sure that there's not stuffed pillows and things that the baby's face could get stuck in and obstruct breathing, that the mattress isn't too soft in the bed. Not being around smoking and not smoking or drinking during pregnancy also seems to help. So all of these things lesson the odds even more. But no, SIDS is still around and I'm hopeful though. Soon we're going to understand it better. There is a lot of research in a way that maybe we'll be able to prevent it completely. But by taking these simple steps the odds are very slim that your baby is going to have SIDS.
