I'm 32. Should I Have My Prostate Checked?
You should be doing regular testicular self-exams now, but a prostate exam can wait until you're 40.
Question:
I have a family history of prostate cancer. My grandfather died from prostate cancer that spread to his testicles. I am 32, almost 33 years old. Should I start getting my prostate and testicles checked by a urologist, or am I too young?
Answer:
You should start getting a prostate exam and PSA at about 40
years old. If you came to me, I would probably perform the check now just for
your piece of mind, and again in a few years.
The testicular self-exam should be done by you every month, preferably when in
the shower. When you see the urologist, he/she can do a testicular exam. This
can also be done by a good primary care doctor.
Prostate cancer doesn't usually spread to the testicles. Rather, the testicles
may be removed, not for the presence of cancer but as a treatment to eliminate
the testosterone from the body, which stimulates the prostate cancer to
grow.
