Chain saw.
After an initial biopsy for prostate cancer came back negative, 62-year-old nurseryman Robert Douglass thought he was out of the woods.
Chain saw.
But he wasn't. A blood test done at the same time showed he had a high PSA density. That's a count that compares the amount of PSA in the blood to the volume of the prostate. His levels triggered doctors to order a second biopsy.
The doctor was very concerned. He said you know blood counts don't lie.
That second biopsy revealed a life-threatening type of prostate cancer requiring surgery.
As far as I'm concerned the doctor saved my life because now we can do something. Otherwise I would have thought I was negative, nothing to worry about.
We're looking for aggressive prostate cancer.
Cancer researcher Shane Rogosin studied the prostate histories of more than 500 men. He found that if men had PSA density levels of 7 or greater, they were more likely to have a deadly form of prostate cancer, even if that first biopsy indicated otherwise.
If patients have had an initial negative prostate biopsy, but we know that their PSA density is high, we feel much more comfortable recommending that those patients go on to have a second biopsy done.
Come on.
If these initial findings hold up, the PSA density test could not only save lives, but also rule out second biopsies for hundreds of thousands of men. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
