Russell A. Barkley, PhD

Russell A. Barkley, PhD, is a professor in the department of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Barkley received his BA in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his MA and PhD in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, after which he attended the Oregon Health Sciences University for internship training in developmental, learning, and behavioral disorders of children. Thereafter, he joined the department of neurology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Milwaukee Children's Hospital, where he founded the Neuropsychology Service and served as its chief until 1985. He then moved to the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was director of psychology for 15 years and professor of psychiatry and neurology until December 2002, when he relocated to MUSC.

Barkley is a diplomate in clinical psychology (ABPP), clinical child and adolescent psychology, and clinical neuropsychology (ABCN, ABPP). He has authored or co-edited 15 books and published more than 180 scientific papers and book chapters related to ADHD and its assessment and treatment. His most recent books include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Handbook for Diagnosis and Treatment, Taking Charge of ADHD: The Complete, Authoritative Guide for Parents, Defiant Children: A Clinician’s Manual for Assessment and Parent Training, and Child Psychopathology, edited with Eric Mash, PhD. He has also created five professional videotapes on ADHD, three of which have won national awards. More recently, he has created two additional professional videotapes on defiant children and their management. In 1993, he founded a newsletter for clinical professionals, The ADHD Report, and serves as its editor. Barkley also serves on the editorial boards of five scientific journals and as a reviewer for numerous other journals.
