There's no known cure for AIDS, so researchers at Saint Jude children's hospital are trying to stop HIV infections from the start.
That's what we want to do. We want to kill the virus before it can cause destruction to us.
Doctors Julia Hurwitz and Karen Slobod have developed a unique vaccine. It's based on the harmless outer coating of the HIV virus called the envelope.
We understand that HIV can come in more than one shape, in terms of its envelope. We need to represent all of those envelopes in a vaccine in order for it to be successful.
There have been studies focusing on one and two-envelope vaccines. The Saint Jude vaccine will ultimately have 50 envelope sequences in all.
We've done a lot of pre-clinical work in the laboratory to identify the best vehicles or vectors to deliver those envelopes to the immune system and generate the strongest and best response.
Preliminary studies are underway to test the safety of the vaccine components on healthy, HIV negative, adult volunteers, like Charlie Green.
Let's not forget they're doing this for children. You know I may be an adult and this may be thought of as an adult disease, but it's not.
The ultimate goal is to find a vaccine that can take on the many faces of HIV. One that's equipped with an army of exactly the right mix and number of envelopes.
Then if the HIV is introduced into the system, the army kills it instantaneously.
A promising new weapon in the long, frustrating battle against aids. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
