Sandra Han is a medical student on a mission. She's part of a new birth control pill study at her school.
After reading all the blurbs on information and the benefits and risks and everything, I thought why not.
The new birth control pill contains versions of estrogen and progesterone that are more similar to the natural hormones made by the body. Researchers want to see if it has fewer side effects than current birth control pills.
It's using an estrogen that we haven't used in birth control before that's a natural estrogen. And so we're hoping that that may again provide a product that she's happy with and has fewer side effects and is equally effective or more effective than what we currently have.
Sandra thinks this one's a keeper.
Something I've noticed with this one is less weight gain for me, so that's been a benefit and I would definitely look into using it as a product if it was approved in the future.
As it is, not quite half of the pregnancies in the United States that occur each year are unintended. So either people are not using products or aren't using them correctly. So we are always looking for improvements to make the products more acceptable to women and better tolerated.
If all goes as planned, Doctor Ballagh says it will be two to three years before the new pill could be on the market. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
