Zulia Walker had her teenage years cut short when she became pregnant with her son, Gabriel.
I'm working and coming home and taking care of my baby, and that's it. I don't have a social life anymore. It's just me and him, and that's practically it.
Zulia's trying to make the best of her situation. Unlike the other 80 percent of teen moms, she married Gabriel's father, graduated early from high school, and attended college. But the consequences of teen sex can run much deeper than pregnancy alone. That's why experts are also focusing on the health hazards.
I think kids aren't aware of how common STDs are. Fifteen-million STDs every year, and two-thirds of them occur in teenagers and young adults.
Sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and herpes have no cure. Plus HPV, or human papilloma virus can cause genital warts, or even worse, cervical cancer. That's why Doctor Sulak created the Worth-the-Wait sex education campaign. It focuses on the medical consequences of teen sex. Hearing the Worth-the-Wait program was a real eye opener for 15-year-old Lou Mandy Allison.
A virus is with you forever. And that's, that's a really scary thing, that you're gonna have that from the time that you're maybe 15 to the time that you're 85.
So far, programs like this are working. Teen pregnancy rates are down and studies show increased abstinence among girls is a major factor. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
