Hi, I'm Dr. Holly McCoppin. If you're considering a hair transplant, the first step is to find out whether this procedure is right for you. This would be a good discussion to have with a hair transplant surgeon. Considerations will include your age and general state of health, your stage and type of hair loss, the rate at which you're losing your hair, and your hair restoration goals.

Hair transplants involve moving individual hair follicle units of one to a few hairs from one part of the head-- usually the back of the head-- to the site that's thinning or bald. Are you still with me? Then it's time to pick a surgeon.

You want to not only ask about the surgeon but their support staff as well. Find out how many procedures they've performed. Before and after photos of their patients are a must, as are patient referrals. If you don't get this information, look elsewhere.

It's important to remember that a hair transplant is not like a doctor's office visit. It's a surgical procedure that takes several hours to perform and several months to see results. So prepare to invest the time. Be aware that you may need further surgeries down the road should you continue to bald.

Finally, be ready to pay out of pocket. Most insurance plans consider this an elective procedure and may not cover the cost. A good place for further information is the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
