This is a type of photosensitivity reaction in which the skin reacts as it would with a severe sunburn when exposed to light, This is a chemically induced skin irritation with light exposure; no immunologic mechanism is involved. Phototoxic drugs and chemicals include some dyes, coal tar derivatives, and psoralens. Drugs that may cause a phototoxic reaction include the sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and thiazides.
