Nancy Bowen didn't know she had sleep apnea until she went on a church mission trip and her sleepless roommates clued her in.
You really ought to get this checked out! We'd, like, lay there and wait, you know, are you going to start again?
Nancy's nighttime breathing stoppages were a wake-up call to get medical advice.
This is a lifelong problem. It's not a three week problem. It's not a three month problem. Unfortunately for most people, it's not a three year problem.
Though Nancy tried the CPAP breathing machine, she found it difficult to deal with. So she enrolled in a study for the new advanced system.
The action of this new device is actually to help and prevent the tongue from falling back during sleep.
When we sleep, the tongue can relax back into the throat and block the air way. With the advance system, a multi-pronged tissue anchor is inserted into the tongue muscle. Then, a tether attaches to a bone anchor.
And we can adjust this to add more tension on the tongue muscle or less, for that matter. So we can adjust it forward and/or backwards.
While results from European studies have been good, Doctor Woodson says this isn't a complete fix.
By itself, this is likely not the cure for sleep apnea. But I think it'll be a big part for many patients that have surgery.
For Nancy, it's an improvement from where she started.
I don't snore quite as much or quite as loud as I did before.
Thanks to a device that helps her stitch up a better night's sleep. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
