It's been almost two years since Mick Moroney had his stroke.
My whole left side shut down. I mean it was just from here, all the way down my leg, my leg, my arm, it was just like somebody nailed me to the bed.
To regain the motion the stroke had stolen, Mick went through traditional therapy, then signed on for a more creative approach. Mick's playing a virtual reality video game that puts him right in the middle of the action. It's a fun way to teach his muscles how to work again.
It's something that allows us to work with a patient and keep their interest, keep them focused on their therapy and keep them motivated to make gains and you know return to their prior functional status.
Mick's sessions require patience and perseverance.
You know, sort of, you know, tries to teach you little subtlety with the instead of just slapping at it, 'cause then the balloons burst. You have to hit it gently and it'll turn into a bird. So, I mean, you know just, just little subtleties with it that you know help you coordinate your movements.
That coordination is priceless and the future of this high-tech system is looking good, too.
Some research says you know it's an outstanding treatment method. Other research shows that it's good, but it's something that needs to be used just as part of the regular therapy program.
Therapy that's providing Mick with more and more movement every day. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
