At age 59, James McKenney thought he was just getting old.
Anyway I got up, my first foot on the floor, here I get this little dizzy spell or what not.
For a few months, those spells came and went. Then one night the spells didn't go away. He could barely stand.
Then I started sweating... and sweating profusely, just kept going on. Then I knew it as a problem.
James got to a hospital in time. His dizzy spells were really T-I-A's... Mini-strokes caused by blood clots that temporarily blocked arteries in his brain.
Is that clear? It's clear.
Clear and scary.
Neurologist Salman Azhar (sol-MAHN AHZ-her) Says the symptoms can be vague: numbness on one side, language problems, or blurred vision. They usually last only an hour or two.
People then wait for weeks or they'll go to their doctor two weeks later, when really, they should come to the emergency room right away.
Why? Because a deadly or disabling stroke is probably just around the corner. And a new study says that's even more likely when weakness or speech impairment are the symptoms... When you're over 60, or when you have diabetes – like James.
I'd expect your coordination to be a little off, but it's actually pretty good. That's how I tell, tell it to them. You know, 'You got lucky, and now, if we can figure out what's causing these symptoms, we can actually prevent you from having a stroke.
James is cashing in on his luck... Taking medication and improving his diet.
I've had no problems whatsoever. I've been living a charmed life except for the flu.
