When is a pillow dead?

Michael Breus, PhD
So a dead pillow, or a sick pillow, as I call them can, a very easy test to find out what's going on there. Put your arm up and lay your pillow across your arm. If it looks like a pair of old saddle bags, it's time for it to go. Another test is to fold your pillow in half and place a shoe on top of it and if the shoe doesn't spring off, you know that your pillow is probably not supportive at this point. So, looking for these things is important. Remember, you sweat and there is oil from your skin and there are dust mites that will inhabit your pillows so putting your head on that type of environment may or may not be a good thing if you've had a pillow for a very long period of time.

Why, what's in it?

Michael Breus, PhD
Well, sweat, oil, dust mites. The easiest way by the way to get rid of dust mites in your pillow is to stick it in the freezer for 12 hours and it will kill all of them, kill them all.

Narrator
You can, but I wouldn't suggest putting it near the ice cream or anything like that.
