OSTEOPATHY Overview Information
Osteopathic medicine, is a complete system of medicine that uses a wide variety of methods for diagnosing and treating all types of medical conditions. Osteopathic medicine was founded by Andrew Taylor Still in rural Kansas in the late 1800s. He founded the first school of osteopathic medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892.
In the US, osteopathic physicians (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, DO) are licensed physicians who are similar to physicians with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Both Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctors of Medicine use the same diagnostic procedures and treatments. In addition to these approaches, osteopathic physicians are also trained to use manipulative techniques, such as spinal adjustments. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine suggest that osteopathic medicine is different than conventional medicine because it puts more emphasis on a whole-person approach and also stresses preventive medicine.
Osteopathic medicine has one similarity to chiropractic. Both osteopathic medicine and chiropractic are referred to as manipulative therapies because both use hands-on physical manipulation techniques to diagnose and treat some conditions. However, osteopathic practitioners and chiropractors are quite different in other ways.
How does it work?
Osteopathic medicine is a whole system of medicine that uses a variety of techniques and therapies to diagnose and treat medical conditions, similar to conventional medicine. Diagnostic approaches include conventional laboratory tests and physical assessment. Treatments used are similar to those used by Doctors of Medicine (MDs). However, osteopathic physicians also use physical medicine including spinal manipulation. Like chiropractors, doctors of osteopathic medicine believe that problems with the muscles and bones (musculoskeletal system) can result in illness. So, specific spinal manipulations are used for some conditions, especially back pain or neck pain. Conventional treatments such as medication, psychiatry, surgery, etc., are also used.
