Just an FYI- pictures on Google images have elderberry confused with poke berry. Elderberries are arranged like the flower on Queen Ann's lace... broad umbrella shape. Poke berries grow pendulously around a center stem.

There is so much misinformation in this article it isn't even funny. Pokeweed, when properly harvested and prepared is a safe and nutritious food that has been eaten for years. Why no citations? Why no author's name? Was it written by AI?

I find that eating the poke tends to help me more than the pills. I have read online just today from this site as well as merriweathers foraging Texas and a few others that eating the older leaves is poisonous... WE have been eating the leaves small or large since the 80's and my grandparents longer than that and they are 82 yrs old now. WE just boil them till they are foaming pretty good then and dump the water two times and boil them a third time and enjoy. or dump one more time then boil again, then enjoy.Read More Read Less

I had sudden and extreme lower back and hip nerve pain for several days. I am not allergic to the stalk or berries on my skin. While monitoring for side effects, I ate one purple ripe berry on the first day, 2 day 2, 3 day 3, 0 day 4, 3 day 5. Pain reduced day 4, gone day 6. No side effects. This is not advice, only my experience.

As a child, we boiled the young leaves and ate them as spinach (after pouring the water off and re-boiling 3 more times). It has a wonderful flavor. My husband's family used to chop the stalks, fry and eat as okra. There are many old wives tales about it.
