Elisabeth Shue, 48, makes it look sublimely simple to keep it all together. "All" includes her second season as Julie Finlay on CBS' mega-hit CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which premieres Sept. 26, and her role in last month's dramedy Hope Springs, opposite Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep.
This month, the Harvard alum and mom of three plays the mother of Jennifer Lawrence's character in the horror thriller House at the End of the Street. And in October, she's in the surfing saga Chasing Mavericks opposite Gerard Butler. Shue doesn't have much free time, but she says, "When I do, I'll be more involved in KIPP schools for students in underserved communities."
"I've been practicing and relying on Transcendental Meditation for those moments when I feel frantic or anxious. I just stop for 20 minutes to calm myself. I also unwind by hitting tennis balls."
Shue's Beauty Regimen
"I don't wear much makeup ever, and that requires some acceptance that I'm not perfect. I do have decent skin. I'm usually in a rush, but I always wear a hat and sunblock when I play tennis. Also, I always keep mascara in my purse. I use mine until they're dried up and there's nothing left, then I go right to Rite Aid for more."
Shue's Healthy Snacks
"When I'm on the set, I always keep a crunchy snack on hand – rice cakes with apple spread or almond butter. I drink lots of water, sometimes with Emergen-C powdered supplements, and I also like Honest Tea."
"Tennis has helped me through my midlife crises. It's linear, and I can measure progress, plus it helps me focus. I love competing, love the challenge – pretty perfect. You have to be brave, and you can feel your personality come out on the court."
