Oct. 27, 2022 – Eight varieties of Pine-Sol products sold at major retailers nationwide are being recalled because they may contain dangerous bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

“People with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment,” the company warned on a special website set up for the recalled products. “The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria.”

The recall affects 37 million bottles manufactured from January 2021 to September 2022 at parent company Clorox’s plant in Forest Park, GA.  The products were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Dollar General, Target, Kroger, Publix, and Amazon.com, among others.

The contamination was found by the Pine-Sol research and development team during a “routine product review,” a Clorox spokeswoman told The New York Times.

The risk to the average person is “negligible,” but for those with weakened immune systems, like a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy,  the bacteria could be lethal, Rutgers University professor Martin Blaser, MD, told the Times.

No injuries have been reported and the recall is voluntary, according to the notice posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission

The specific product varieties affected are:

  • Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, and Lemon Fresh scents
  • CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh, and Orange Energy scents
  • Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners

Recalled bottles of these varieties have date codes beginning with the prefix “A4” and the first five digits numbered less than 22249. The products are sold in bottles of 28, 48, 60, 100, 144 and 175 fluid ounces.

The original Pine-Sol in pine scent is not being recalled, and is "safe to use as directed," according to the company’s website.

Individual consumers as well as stores and distributors are being asked to contact the company if they have recalled products. For reimbursement, fill out the online form or call 855-378-4982. Calls will be answered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET.
