Causes of acquired aplastic anemia include:

Inherited conditions such as Fanconi anemia, Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, and Diamond-Blackfan anemia, can damage cells and cause aplastic anemia.

  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Chemicals such as pesticides, arsenic, and benzene
  • Infections including hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, and HIV
  • Radiation and chemotherapy treatments for cancer
