What causes Cushing's syndrome?

ANSWER

Cushing's syndrome is when your body has too much stress hormone cortisol for too long. It’s most commonly caused by medications called glucocorticoids, also called steroids or prednisone.

These drugs are prescribed for asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or after an organ transplant. They are powerful anti-inflammatory medications.

Another cause is a tumor in your pituitary gland, found at the base of the brain, or a tumor in the adrenal glands.

Rarely, you can get Cushing’s because a problem in your genes makes you more likely to get tumors on your glands.
