The number is people who need a new kidney far outnumber the potential donors. Certain conditions can prevent you from receiving a kidney transplant, including if you:

  • Have or recently had cancer
  • May live only a few more years because of an illness
  • Have infection that can’t be treated or keeps coming back
  • Aren’t healthy enough to undergo surgery
  • Are very overweight
  • Have dementia
  • Abuse drugs or alcohol
  • Have trouble remembering to take medicine
  • Have mental health problems that aren’t easily managed
