What is uric acid and what does it mean if you have high levels of it?

ANSWER

Uric acid is a waste byproduct. It’s formed when your body breaks down purines, which are found in some foods. Purines show up when cells die and get taken apart. Most of the uric acid leaves your body when you pee, and some when you poop.

If you have high levels of uric acid, it can be a sign of disease such as gout. That’s when you might need a specific blood test that measures how much uric acid you have in your blood.

You may also hear this test called a serum uric acid test, serum urate, or UA.
