Leukemia Directory

Leukemia is cancer of the blood that develops from an overproduction of immature white blood cells. As the white cells accumulate, they interfere with vital organ functions, including the production of healthy blood cells, making people with leukemia anemic and susceptible to bruising, bleeding, and infection. Leukemia is classified as acute or chronic. Leukemias are further classified according to the type of white blood cell involved. No one knows exactly what causes leukemia, but chromosome abnormalities, exposure to pollution, prolonged exposure to radiation, and tobacco smoking may be factors. Treatment typically includes chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
