While I’m being treated for cancer, what diet tips can keep me healthy but help me avoid germs?

ANSWER

Eat a well-balanced diet. Ask your doctor if you can eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Some doctors say it’s OK if you wash them well. Others say you should skip them. Stay away from raw meat, shellfish, and eggs. Avoid foods that have been linked to infection outbreaks before, like raw sprouts, berries, and fresh salsa.

Don't eat deli foods, free food samples, or soft-serve yogurt and ice cream. Skip foods bought from self-serve or bulk bins. Don't buy dented cans or precut fruits and veggies.
