How do you know the stage of colon cancer?

ANSWER

A pathologist will look at the tissue from your biopsy under a microscope and write a report that describes:

Based on these results, your doctor will stage your cancer. The stage tells:

  • The types of cells
  • The size, shape, and other features of your cells, compared with cancer cells. (This is called the grade.)
  • How quickly the cells divide
  • Whether the cancer has spread to other parts of your body
  • The size of your tumor
  • Where it's located
  • Whether the cancer has spread and where
