Can I Use Clear Aligners if Only My Bottom Teeth Are Crowded?

By Manjari Bansal
Clear aligners are often preferred over traditional braces. Find out more about the role of clear aligners in correcting crowded bottom teeth.

If you have crowding only in your bottom teeth, you may be able to correct it with clear aligners. After your eligibility for this type of treatment is determined, your provider will examine your teeth and plan your clear aligner treatment based on the severity of your dental crowding. Learn how clear aligners can correct bottom teeth crowding and what the advantages of the devices are.

Clear Aligners and Bottom Teeth Crowding

“Clear aligners can be used for bottom teeth crowding,” Vick Gupta, DDS, an orthodontist at Gupta Orthodontics in Dallas, tells WebMD Connect to Care.

“This is indicated in any case where there is mild to moderately severe lower crowding,” Gupta says.

Clear aligners have made orthodontic treatment less conspicuous by being almost invisible, the American Association of Orthodontists reports. Aligners are custom-made orthodontic appliances that correct teeth crowding by slowly moving your teeth into the right position. They are more convenient than traditional braces, as they can be removed while eating, brushing, flossing, or during social events.

Treatment usually starts with an evaluation of your teeth crowding with the help of some diagnostics. “In order to get clear aligners, a digital scan of the mouth and bite must be taken,” Mahnaz Rashti, DDS, a periodontist in Beverly Hills, tells WebMD Connect to Care.

“With the help of the scan, a customized set of trays will be made to gradually shift the teeth into the correct position. The trays are usually switched every two weeks,” Rashti says.

Sometimes, “translucent attachments are placed on the crowded teeth to provide the necessary forces to move the teeth in a specific direction,” Joshua Perlman, DMD, cosmetic dentist, and owner of NYC Smile Spa in New York, tells WebMD Connect to Care.

“Clear aligners allow us to move teeth forwards/backward, up and down, and even [rotate] them into the proper position,” Perlman adds.

According to a 2019 review article published in the Turkish Journal of Orthodontics, with an increasing number of adult orthodontic patients, the demand for more esthetic and comfortable orthodontic treatment options has also gone up. That is why clear aligners have gained immense popularity over the last 10 years.

Clear aligners provide a more esthetic and comfortable treatment experience and facilitate oral hygiene, are less painful than braces, and require fewer and shorter visits to the doctor.
