It's important to get bad behaviors in check when you have type 2 diabetes because most of the treatment for diabetes is lifestyle changes. A good place to start when you want to change your behavior is to find out what those behaviors are doing for you. You're going to get something out of a behavior or you wouldn't do it. So try to figure out what you're getting from that behavior and then try to substitute another behavior-- a healthier behavior for it. One of the bad behaviors you might have is sitting around too much instead of getting and moving your body. So instead of just watching TV, maybe you can get a bike or recumbent bike and use the bike in front of the TV while you're watching your favorite show. Drinking a lot of drinks that have added sugars in them is a bad behavior for a type 2 diabetic. You can start small with changes. Look at the amount of soda you drink and see if you can cut that by half. And then after you're used to drinking half as much soda then maybe you can switch to something that's unsweetened like flavored seltzer or a little bit of water with a little bit of juice and lemon in it. These are kind of different options that you can use instead of the soda. If you're-- really like fast food and because you feel like you don't have time to cook for yourself or you don't know how to cook for yourself, you can turn that around and actually find foods that are fast but healthy for you. These are things you can keep in your own kitchen. These are things you can buy in bulk and then cut down into smaller portions and keep on hand. With smoking, a lot of people find it relaxing or they use smoking to get through the day. So there's different ways to get through the day. A lot of our patience, when they start exercising, they have less cravings to smoke because the exercise gives them the energy that they need to get through the day and it also decreases depression. Instead of seeing your life as a big mess of bad behaviors, look at your life and say, I am a creature of habit and I can change those habits. And I can look at my life and I can change simple things every day to make myself healthier and to feel better in my body. [MUSIC PLAYING]
