RECALL: Ice Cream Bars for Listeria Concern

Editor's Note:  Since this story published, Fieldbrook Foods expanded the recall to include raspberry bars sold at ALDI.

Jan. 11, 2018 -- The discovery of listeria bacteria in a line of ice cream bars has led to a national recall.

New York-based Fieldbrook Foods has recalled its orange cream and chocolate-coated vanilla ice cream bars produced in 2017 and sold in dozens of grocery chains across the country. Affected stores include Kroger, Dollar Tree, Aldi, Giant, Giant Eagle, Bi-Lo, Safeway, and Fred Meyer, among others.

The recalled products, sold under a variety of brand names, have production dates of between Jan. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2017, and a “best by” date of Jan. 1, 2018, to Dec. 31, 2018.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the threat. The FDA says the potential listeria contamination was found during routine testing. Listeria monocytogenes was found “in only a few ice cream bar samples of many tested,” the agency says in a news release. The recall was expanded once more samples tested positive for listeria.

Fieldbrook Foods has suspended production and distribution of all products it makes on one production line where the bacteria was found. The FDA is investigating.

Anyone who has purchased the affected products should return them for a refund. For more information, call Fieldbrook Foods at 800-333-0805, ext. 2270.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may have only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
