What should I Know Regarding Pregnancy, Nursing and Administering Oxycodone HCL Solution to Children or the Elderly?

If you are PREGNANT

  • Requires a Risk/Benefit Assessment:

If you are NURSING

  • Precaution: MONITOR FOR CHANGES IN RESPIRATION, GI EFFECTS, SEDATION, FEEDING PATTERN

If you are an adult over 60

  • management or monitoring precaution: General-Consider adding naloxone Rx. Pulmonary-Life threatening respiratory depression risk with high doses, cachexia, or debilitation due to altered pharmacokinetics (poor fat stores, muscle wasting, or altered clearance). Monitor closely at initiation and dose titration. Neuro/Psych-Risk for increased confusion and delirium. May increase fall risk. Avoid treatment with 3 or more CNS active drugs. Gastrointestinal-Constipation risk. Urogenital-Urinary retention risk.

Giving Oxycodone HCL Solution to a child under 12

  • Contraindication: Risk for fatal respiratory depression. Increased sensitivity to effects and adverse effects. Controlled release form only in opioid tolerant patient age 11 years and older. With any opioid, access to naloxone for emergency reversal can mitigate risk from accidental ingestion/overdose.
  • Severe Precaution: Consider risk for fatal respiratory depression in opioid naive patients. Restricted use for opioid tolerant patient. Increased sensitivity to effects and adverse effects. With any opioid, access to naloxone for emergency reversal can mitigate risk from accidental ingestion/overdose.
  • Severe Precaution: Potential increased sensitivity to effects, adverse CNS effects and respiratory depression. With any opioid, access to naloxone for emergency reversal can mitigate risk from accidental ingestion/overdose.
